Sacramento's Golden Days

Sacramento is the capital of California and the oldest city in the state. During the California Gold Rush, Sacramento was the beginning and end of the line for wagon trains, stagecoaches, riverboats, steam trains and the pony express.

Old Sacramento is the historic region of the city and has been designated a state park for residents and tourists who want to take a step back in time. This is where residents and visitors can take in the Old Sacramento living history program, a convincing recreation of life in the wild west's gold rush days.

Recreation and Culture

Surrounded by the gastronomic wealth of the central valley, Sacramento is serious about food. You'll find great local restaurants offering everything from taquitos to sushi, fresh baked bread and bowls of steamed chai.

Sacramento's many live music venues and informal performances showcase everything from gospel, jazz, and mariachi to folk and blues. Residents can take in a play at the B Street Theatre, shoot some pool at the Blue Cue, dance all night at the Park Ultra Lounge or see a live concert at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre.

Sports nuts will love Sacramento's deep affection for basketball. The city is home to two professional teams — the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Monarchs. The land in the valley also makes for good golfing and there are a number of great championship courses in Sacramento including the award winning Haggin Oaks golf course.

Both the Sacramento River and the American River are popular local playgrounds. The American River in particular is like a magnet for kayaks, rafts and jet-skis on the city's many sunny days.

Sacramento State University is also located here. The large university campus sees about 6,000 students graduate each year. Small class sizes and plenty of internship opportunities make it a popular choice for post secondary education - one in 26 local residents are Sac State alumni.

Employment and Transportation

Located where the American and Sacramento rivers converge in the lush Central Valley, Sacramento is a natural center of trade and agriculture. Food processing is among the major industries in the area and large boats travel between the inland city and San Francisco Bay carrying fruit, vegetables, rice, wheat and milk.

Sacramento is a major employment center and state government center. Because the state capitol is located here, the state government remains the largest employer in the city.

The city is served by a light rail system and extensive transit system. In addition, the Yolobus system travels between Davis, West Sacramento, Winters, Woodland, downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento International Airport.

Climate

The weather in Sacramento is Mediterranean with mild winters and dry hot summers. You'll see the tule fog on most winter mornings, a low lying cloud named after the tule grass wetlands of the central valley.
